The fluxus event, crawling, engages audience participation as we crawl together on the floor. The comment responses to the piece reflect our complex relationship to crawling, a physical activity with loaded symbolism. Our audience saw the activity as both sexual and child-like. Participants’ feedback via the post-it notes raised ideas around submissiveness, sexuality, and kink, in addition to or rather than the feeling of a return to infancy and child-like action. Participants often felt an ownership over the action due to engaging in the process from their own perspectives. Having adults return to a childhood state of development through the action of a lower physical position creates a conversation about sexuality, submission, and the loss of innocence.
