Risk and Respect

Risk and Respect (2015)
Video Installation
Alberta University of the Arts

This video combines footage of the artist with her two nephews, ages 6 and 4.  The piece explores the physical autonomy of children and the tension that creates within the adult, as their authority is resisted while the child gains independence. As the children run in opposite directions away from their caregiver, the adult becomes anxious, yet must trust the boys to know their own limits, since they have worked to learn safety rules together. This piece confronts our modern culture of control and protection that affects the perceived abilities of children and how the physical freedom of children creates tension for and among adults.
